Dear Mr Peter Leech:

As the direct mail does not accept the attached pictures, I resend to you the full text of the letter containing the two pictures via the "attach file".

We are very grateful if you could publish our forewarning letter. With the publication of our letter in your magazine, our concerns will be heard and known by a wider public.

We wish you all the bests

Yours sincerely

Hello Hung

Thank you for submitting the press release of your group of scientists' letter concerning China's claim to a greater part of the 'South China Sea' ('Southeast Asia Sea' or known by various other names)

I am willing to publish your letter verbatim as a press release but I would appreciate it if you would supply the maps referred to in your release (figure A, B /etc) as the text of the letter refers to such map areas.

If supplied, these maps would be included as an image/s in the release.

Yours sincerely
Peter J Leech

Dear Hung Nguyen,

I am a reporter with Nature. I refer to the letter that you sent to Nature's editor-in-chief earlier this month. I am hoping that we can find time to discuss this issue at your earliest convenience. For example, I would like to discuss:

Have you approached the researchers themselves with regard to any of the publications below? If so, what did they say?

I would also like to ask your help in finding people that might be able to answer more detailed questions, specifically with relation to Nature's role as covering the scientific community. For example

Does this issue come up at scientific meetings? Do scientists from other countries protest when Chinese researchers use such images?
Do Vietnamese researchers also include disputed islands in figures that they use?

Thank you for any help you can give. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best,
David

Thank you for contacting the National Geographic Society.

Your comments have been forwarded to our cartographic staff. Please note that when a place-name is disputed or there are variants, National Geographic does not arbitrate but follows a long-standing policy of reflecting the current de facto political reality. The primary name used is that of the controlling government with variants in parentheses: ie Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas).

When a name is jointly controlled by more than one country or is in international waters, the conventional name is given first with variants in parentheses: ie Mount Everest (Sagarmatha, Qomolangma), Sea of Japan (East Sea).

Thank you for your interest in the National Geographic Society.

Sincerely yours,
Julie Crain
